Journalist and human rights activist Hoi Yi fights against surveillance and censorship, which are intensifying around the world. Hoi Yi is queer, but he has to hide this from his family. His personal experience of oppression is reflected in his determination to defend the freedom of others.

“Breaking Walls” is a new Dutch animated documentary film that premiered in February 2026 and has already won the award for Best Animation at the prestigious documentary film festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The film’s creator, Jan-Dirk Bouw, is a screenwriter and interdisciplinary filmmaker who combines animation, documentary cinema, and fiction filmmaking in his work. Bouw’s projects are known for their emotional depth, experimental form, and ambition to create social impact.

He makes films about identity, freedom, and self-determination. The director’s goal is to challenge audiences, encourage reflection, and bring hidden or taboo subjects into open discussion within a social and political context.

Film languages: Dutch, English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The film will be screened with Estonian and Russian subtitles.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Jan-Dirk Bouw and LGBTQ activists from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Together we will discuss censorship, the (in)visibility of queer people, and freedom of expression, as well as learn about the challenges queer communities face in the Baltic countries.

The discussion will be held in English.

The screening will take place as part of Baltic Pride Tallinn 2026 with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Estonia

The screening is organized by Q-Space, an LGBTQ organization in Estonia.
