A young man named Aleksei arrives to work at Patarei prison, where Estonian nationalists are held. A summer night wedding party unexpectedly leads to a sudden drift apart of the bride and groom, Astrid and Tõnis. The dreams and thoughts preceding the wedding, about what marriage means for each of them, are no longer the anchor that keeps Astrid and Tõnis attached to their promise. As they have tied themselves to each other, the hesitation of one becomes the hesitation of the other; the weight of one also pulls down the other. Not knowing yet how to be together while remaining themselves gives way to the fear that commitment to another means losing oneself.
The feelings that were suppressed before the marriage become an impenetrable silence between the couple over the course of the night. A silence that is easy to fill with one's own doubts. Will they reach an understanding in silence, or misunderstand each other in silence?
