This Can't Happen Here

Sånt händer inte här

Genre

Drama

Director

Ingmar Bergman

Run time

1h 24min

Cast

Signe Hasso, Alf Kjellin, Ulf Palme

This is the film Bergman never wanted you to see: a post-war thriller (!) about refugees and infiltrating spies from the fictitious „modern dictatorship” of Liquidatzia, an allegorical stand-in for the Soviet Union. Bergman detested the film, forced on him by his need for money, and did everything in his power to prevent it from being seen. Now, thanks to his family, a restored version is made available for a very limited number of screenings. Apart from the political plot and the demonic villain Atkä Natas (just read his name backwards!), the film stands out due to the co-starring real-life Estonian refugees, among them theatre stars Hanno Kompus, Edmar Kuus, Lensi Römmer and Marje Parikas, who all fled to Sweden in 1944. This was to be their only film roles in their new adopted country.

The screening has a special movie guest Christo Burman
