COLOR OF THE OCEAN is almost too real of a drama about the life of refugees. It reflects the journey of a refugee – the difficulties, conflicts and motivation. A Congolese man Zola (Hubert Koundé) with his Congolese-Senegalese son are a few of the survivors from the refugee ship washed to the shore. They are taken to a refugee detention centre in the Canaries where their hopeful journey begins.
The two main characters – Nathalie (Sabine Timoteo), a German tourist and José (Álex González), a detention officer of the camp – make the film full of desperation and empathy as well as frustration and humanity. They help to understand the dichotomy between the two worlds.
Besides the emotional plot, the film is visually very enjoyable. Even too enjoyable from time to time. Sandy beaches, sunshine and ocean – they seem to complete the anxiety a viewer gets from the film with a certain sense of peace.
