Director

Grigori Kozintsev

Run time

1h 40min

Cast

Nikolai Tšerkasov, Juri Tolubejev, Ljudmila Kasjanova, Serafima Birman

Based on the novel of Miguel de Cervantes. Fabulous set designs and a fantastic attention to detail mark Grigori Kozintsev's "Don Quixote" as a tremendous example of how best to adapt from the page to the screen. Beautifully imagined, Kozintsev's depiction of the illustrious adventures of one of literature's most beloved figures remains a remarkable example of the monumental achievements achieved during the height of Soviet filmmaking.

Señor Quijano (Nikolai Cherkasov) is a man who has read so many books on chivalry that he deludes himself into believing he is Don Quixote, the heroic knight of La Mancha. However, despite the diminished scale of this cinematic adaptation of such a cherished compendium of stories, the valiant deeds performed by Quixote and his loyal (if not a little naive) sidekick Sancho Panza (Yuri Tolubeyev) remains a thoroughly entertaining experience.

Awards:

“Femina du Cinema” Award and Honorary Diploma at the IFF in Brussels, Belgium (1958).

Honorary Diploma, Special Prize and Jury Diploma of the National Cinema Club Federation at the IFF in San Sebastian, Spain (1964). 3rd Prize for the film, 2nd Prize to G. Kozintsev, 1st and 2nd Prize to A. Moskvin and A. Dudko at the 1st All-Union Film Festival (1958). Honorary Diploma at the 1st IFF in Vancouver, Canada (1958). Award to N. Cherkasov for Best Male Lead at the IFF in Stradford, Canada (1958).
