CALF is an independent DVD label specializing in Japanese short films, including

animation. The label has been producing and distributing DVDs of works by young

independent animators in Japan and is now becoming a producer of short films by

young filmmakers. It is a unique attempt because the label was founded and has been

led by the animators and critics themselves. Their films are now represented at nearly

all the major animation festivals. Nobuaki Doi’s presentation will refer to the reasons

for founding CALF and its strategy for surviving. CALF was not born out of nothing.

Some recent situations conspired to make it happen. Doi will inevitably reveal the

situation not only in the world of short independent animations but also in the film

industry in Japan, which seem to have many common points with other countries.

CALF authors Mirai Mizue and Atsushi Wada will join the talk as well.
